Health Professions Advanced Summer Scholars Program.

Des Moines University Health Professions Advanced Summer Scholars Program - the DMU Health P.A.S.S. - to be offered for the first time July 11 - 30, 2010. This FREE three-week program is available to 10 promising undergraduates. The Health P.A.S.S. program is geared towards rising sophomores and juniors and may be of particular interest to those students undecided about which health care field they wish to pursue. Students will:
  • Learn what it's like to be a student in a medical/health professions school environment
  • Review the medical/health professions school application, interview and admission processes
  • Have hands-on clinical opportunities and practical exposure
  • Be encouraged to pursue a professional health care degree and career
Preference will be given to qualified candidates from populations under-represented in medicine and health care, including minority, low-income and/or first-generation college students. Des Moines University will provide a stipend for travel and cover the full costs of each student's meals, materials and accommodations in residence halls at nearby Drake University. Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences – 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences – 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Program for students who are interested in pursing a career in biomedically related sciences. Students will have the opportunity to:
  • Obtain hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories
  • Interact with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students
  • Attend a weekly luncheon/seminar series, with presentations by faculty
  • Attend skills/development workshops, such as presentation skills, interview skills, etc.
  • Attend and present at works-in-progress sessions with the cohort of summer students
  • Present their research at a special poster session at the end of the program.
Areas of research include:
  • Developmental biology and genetics
  • Signals and pathways involved in the control of cell proliferation
  • Cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and protein targeting
  • Tumor immunology, immunotherapy, and transplantation biology
  • Genomic integrity and human cancer genetics
  • Drug development, drug resistances, and clinical therapeutics
  • Chemical biology and structural biology
  • Computational biology
Applicants should have a minimum of 3.0 gpa and have completed at least general biology and/or introductory chemistry, and be freshmen, sophomores, or juniors. Students accepted into the program will receive a stipend of $3,000 and housing. Des Moines University, Health Professions Advanced Summer Scholars Program

Des Moines University, Health Professions Advanced Summer Scholars Program—to prepare for and enhance your chances of getting into medical or health professions school. Includes lectures/presentations in four clinical areas, shadowing doctors/other care providers, and finding out what it is like to be a medical, PA or PT student. Offered for the first time July 11-30, 2010, preference will be given to qualified applicants from populations under-represented in medicine and health care, including minority, low-income and/or first-generation college students. Ideal applicants will have completed: 8 hours of biology, 8 hours of chemistry, 3 hours of English/speech/composition, and have gpa of 3.0. Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences – 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships

Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences – 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Biological chemistry, biophysics, cancer biology, cell regulation, chemical biology, computational biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, integrative biology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, pharmacology. Applicants must be enrolled in a natural science degree program and have completed the sophomore year. Each fellowship award carries $4,000 in support; housing costs will be covered, but travel expenses will not be reimbursed. Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory

Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, Gothic, Colorado, offers summer opportunities (June 7 – August 15, 2010) including:
Independent Research and Course —students conduct independent research under the supervision of RMBL scientists (80%) time while taking one of three courses (20%). This program targets rising sophomores and juniors as well as students who wish to receive training in a particular area. [Courses are: Methods in Field Ecology; Research Training in Wildlife Biology; Research Training in Field Botany.]
Advanced Independent Research/REU —this program targets rising seniors or those who have graduated. Students conduct independent research under the supervision of RMBL scientists. REU program students receive stipend, room/board, travel.
