PRE-HEALTH INFORMATION from Paul Crosby …
What Should a Premedicine Student be Doing?
Freshmen: Your main focus should be on developing the academic work ethic needed to perform well in your courses. Strategies posted at www.medadvising.ku.edu/academicsuccess.shtml.
Sophomores: It's important to keep performing well in courses, and, if you haven't done so already, to start getting health care, shadowing, social service and/or research experience. Leads posted at www.medadvising.ku.edu/medicine/medexperience.shtml.
It's also time to declare a major or apply for admission to a profession school, and, in consultation with a faculty advisor or advising specialist in your major department, to develop a full graduation plan, every course you plan to take every semester through graduation!
Juniors: It's important to keep performing well in courses and gaining experience, and to plan your preparation and practice for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). MCAT information posted at www.medadvising.ku.edu/medicine/medMCAT.shtml.
To learn about different medical schools, I've placed a copy of the AAMC's Medical School Admission Requirements guide on reserve in the Anschutz Library. It's helpful to visit schools you're interested in before the application process, and, especially if you'd like to go out-of-state, to forge extra connections through a summer research internship or other significant activity with people at that school.
Next spring, you'll start the application process. To foreshadow, you can see an outline of this year's timeline at www.medadvising.ku.edu/medicine/medapp.shtml.
Seniors: It's still important to keep performing well in your courses and gaining experience! Hopefully, you're wrapping up the application process. If you've finished the rest of the application process, this would be a good time to call (785) 864-3500 (8-5, M-F) to schedule a one-hour practice session with me.
Pre- Dentistry, Optometry and Veterinary paths are very similar, and you can find suggestions for getting experience and application timelines at http://www.medadvising.ku.edu/dentistry/index.shtml, http://www.medadvising.ku.edu/optometry/index.shtml, and http://www.medadvising.ku.edu/vm/index.shtml, respectively.

MONARCH WATCH FALL OPEN HOUSE
MONARCH WATCH FALL OPEN HOUSE - FOLEY HALL, WEST CAMPUS ~ Saturday, September 10, 2011 - 8am to 3pm
At the Open House you can learn about creating Monarch Waystations and see the magnificent butterfly and pollinator garden created and maintained by Margarete Johnson and the Douglas County Master Gardeners. Weather permitting, you will see an abundance of butterflies and numerous other small but important pollinators. On a good day over 20 species of butterflies visit the garden. The Biohouse, adjacent to the garden, will be filled with monarchs and other species. The Biohouse and garden contain numerous butterfly flowers. Bring your cameras. It is well worth a visit.
As usual, we will provide refreshments, lots of show & tell (including a honey bee observation hive and some "Oh, my!" insects you may have never seen before), tours of our gardens and lab space, hands-on activities, games, videos, monarch tagging demonstrations, iChat videoconferencing, and, of course, lots of monarch caterpillars, pupae, and butterflies!
We also plan to have a limited number of Monarch pupae (to emerge as a butterfly at home or at school) that will be given to each child in attendance, while supply lasts.

EKO TRACKS ~ STUDY ABROAD, INTERNSHIP,
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Eko Tracks offers several exciting study abroad programs in veterinary science and wildlife conservation, internship in wildlife conservation and park management, volunteer opportunities in wildlife rehabilitation, a field expedition and eco tours in southern Africa. These are specifically designed for students, nature and outdoor lovers, adventurers and other interest groups.
The veterinary study abroad program in South Africa is designed for students in veterinary science, vet tech or pre-vet with a focus on wildlife veterinary science, wildlife diseases and medicine, participation in capture and care of wild animals, breeding of rare species, wildlife rehabilitation, ecosystems and biodiversity conservation. The adventure-filled wildlife conservation program in South Africa focuses on field techniques, sustainable resource utilization, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, game reserve and resort management, and game capture operations. The above programs are offered through lectures, field work and interactions with field vets, biologists and conservationists. These programs are endorsed by the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation.
The wildlife internship is offered in a large biosphere reserve in South Africa where you will acquire knowledge in monitoring, population surveys including lions and elephants, habitat management, biodiversity and park management.
We also offer two volunteer programs in Namibia where volunteers work at an African wildlife sanctuary or on a nature reserve focusing on big cat conservation and habitat restoration.
A unique field expedition, led by a wildlife ecologist explores the landscapes, ecosystems, diversity of wildlife, conservation challenges and parks of Namibia. You will experience behind the scenes activities and discover considerably more than on a typical African safari.
Read more about these exciting educational programs (itinerary, dates, prices etc.) on our website www.ekotracks.com and on Facebook ekotracks.

~ INTEREST MEETING ~
Interest Meeting for the Minority Association of Premedical Students
What: Minority Association of Premedical Students (MAPS) was established in 1964 by Howard University College of Medicine and Meharry Medical College students. MAPS is the oldest independent student organization representing the interest and concerns of underrepresented medical student of color and serving the needs of underserved populations.
Purpose: To improve minority matriculation into professional health related programs with an emphasis on medicine.
Medical Students at the University of Kansas expressed interested in working with premedical students at the University of Kansas (Lawrence Campus). They contacted us and encouraged us to start a MAPS chapter so that we can officially collaborate with them. This organization will provide mentoring opportunities with minority KU medical students and KU physicians. We will also be mentoring middle school children and conducting other community service events in Kansas City. The Student National Medical Association (medical student division of this program) at KU Medical Center is a program under the Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity (http://www2.kumc.edu/oced/).
If you are interested in joining MAPS please email us at kumapschapter@gmail.com with your name, major, year, and t-shirt size. Also, please attend our interest meeting on Tuesday September 13th at 6:30 pm in Room 305 of Anschutz Library (305 is located on the main level of the library straight back by the restrooms).
If you have any questions please email us!
