2)         GET READY FOR CAREER NIGHT!

Hello everyone! Each fall, the Biological Sciences Alumni Advisory Board has sponsored a CAREER NIGHT where participants from area biotech related companies and organizations have been present to discuss career opportunities and advice with our biology majors.  In anticipation of this year's event, we would like to add beneficial features if possible and as such seek your suggestions of what you would be interested in at Career Night.  We also request that you send us your CV or resume to collate in a book and have available for our Career Night participants. This fall's Career Night is set for Wednesday, October 17, so there is plenty of time to put a CV together if you do not have one. You may email your Career Night suggestions and send your CV as an attachment to pmcelroy@ku.edu or you may drop a printed copy at the Biology offices in 2045 Haworth. Thank you! -- Pam McElroy

3)         MARINE BIOLOGY – Winter Break 2008

FIELD STUDIES ON CARIBBEAN CORAL REEFS in Bonaire, a tropical island in the Netherlands Antilles off the coast of Venezuela. Students must enroll in BIOL 420 or 701 (3 credit hours) for this 15-day field course led by Dr. James Thorp. Although the trip will be exciting and fun, this is a formal course with lectures, tests, field trips, and research projects. Field trips will consist of exploration of marine (reefs, sea grass beds, intertidal zones, and mangroves), terrestrial, and inland aquatic habitats. Students will investigate the fringing coral reef during boat dives (12 dives) and unlimited shore dives. Grades will be based on one or more tests, a field notebook, and small-group research projects conducted in the island’s marine habitats. We will stay in a beach-front hotel with multiple students per room; some of the meals will be prepared in our kitchens by our group. Enrollment for the trip is limited to ~12 students because of transportation issues. Students need to be scuba certified (contact Dr. Thorp at thorp@ku.edu) for more information about scuba programs and requirements). Application deadline is October 1. Contact the Study Abroad Office in 108 Lippincott Hall (864-3742; osa@ku.edu) for estimated costs and payment schedule.

4)         VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH OPERATION WILDLIFE

Wonderful opportunity for pre-veterinary students and biology majors interested in wildlife biology, animal health, and public education! OPERATION WILDLIFE is an entirely volunteer-run wildlife rehabilitation facility located in Linwood, (about a 25 minute drive from Lawrence and 30-45 minutes from Johnson County). We are currently in need of volunteers for our main facility to work night shifts, which usually last from 4-8 and are shorter in the winter and longer in the spring and summer. If you can't make it there at 4, we are very flexible and many people come in at 5 or 5:30. The night shifts consist of feeding orphaned babies, giving medication to animals, preparing food, washing dishes, doing laundry, and general cleaning to get ready for the next day. We also need people to work day shifts, especially on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Day shifts start at 8 am and go until everything is finished - usually 4 or 5 in the spring and summer and earlier in the winter. We are very flexible and if you have work or school you can always just come in for a few hours when you are available. Day shifts consist of feeding babies, cleaning cages, answering phone calls, feeding public education animals, and taking care of any animals that may have arrived during the day. Operation Wildlife (OWL) has a very extensive public education program, so if you are interested in going around to schools and teaching the public about our raptors and generally how to live with wildlife, volunteering at the main facility and getting to know the public education volunteers is a great way to get started. If you are on your way to a degree but don't know what you want to do yet, OWL can open many doors for you and help you understand what life is like working in animal care or wildlife management. Also, if you are interested in fundraising, we are a non-profit organization and are currently planning two fundraisers, so if you are a people-person with networking skills we could definitely use you on our fundraising committees! If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please email Jamie Stoughton, our volunteer coordinator, at owlvolunteer@yahoo.com, or Sarah Rages at srages@ku.edu. You can fill out a volunteer application at www.owl-online.org <http://www.owl-online.org> . After filling out an application Jamie will contact you to schedule an orientation date. CAVEATS—We are looking for committed volunteers who will be with us for at least 6 months. We need people we can count on to be on time for their shift and show up every single week and work until we are done. If you sincerely want to help animals and a non-profit organization and are devoted and passionate about wildlife, OWL may be for you. Please remember that most of animal care consists of cleaning up after them. The work is often messy and smelly, BUT VERY REWARDING! OWL workers may be volunteers, but to be a valuable asset to our team you must take OWL as seriously as you would a paying job!

5)         PRE-HEALTH NEWS from Paul Crosby

Heartland Clinic Volunteer Opportunity--Here at the clinic we rely heavily on volunteers in assisting the staff in checking in patients. It is a great “hands on” experience and well worth the time. We are in need of people on Monday morning, all day Tuesday, and all day Thursday. If you are interested, call the clinic at 785-841-7297 and/or stop by and fill out an application at 1 Riverfront Plaza Ste. 100, Lawrence (in the basement, opposite end of the plaza from Abe & Jakes). 6)         WHAT DID YOU DO LAST SUMMER?

Did you have a great internship experience this summer, attend challenging workshops, shadow a physician, volunteer or work in your chosen career field?
Help other students with the same interests find out about opportunities for next summer. Send me a paragraph describing what you did, and how to find out about this opportunity…if you can send along a few photos that would be great also. We will display these on the 1st floor near 1005 Haworth. I would like to have the description/photos by Friday, August 24 (e-mail to: jelder@ku.edu), but this date is flexible.
