Intern Panel: 3:30 – 4:00 pm, McCook Room
Internship Fair: 4:00 – 6:30 pm, Courtside and Relays Rooms
This event provides an excellent opportunity for employers to meet and visit with students about their experiential learning opportunities and their organizations. Students enjoy learning more about a variety of internship opportunities, while employers meet potential candidates for their internship positions. Students from all majors and academic levels are encouraged to attend both the Internship Fair and Intern Panel to receive insight on important information to help them enhance their career development. Students, employers, faculty, staff and administrators are encouraged to attend the Internship Panel (3:30pm until 4:00pm). This event allows students to receive information from University of Kansas students who have participated in past internships. Panelists will share information about their internship experiences, offer advice to future interns, and answer questions related to their experiences. Dress in business attire and bring copies of your resume! For more information (including a list of participating organizations) check: http://www2.ku.edu/~ucc/cgi-bin/internfair.php

3)         ADVISING

Advising in KUUB continues through Friday, 9 November. Current KUUB's advisor contact information is available at http://www.kuub.ku.edu/~kuub/cgi-bin/advising.shtml. Successful advising sessions require that both students and advisors are prepared.  Know your graduation requirements! Check out the Advising Preparation form at http://www.collegesas.ku.edu/forms/FACULTY%20ADVISING%20PREPARATION.pdf before meeting with your advisor.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: You will need to clear all holds before you will be able to enroll (check Enroll & Pay). Freshman will have advising holds placed on their enrollment and any continuing students who have not officially declared a major will have a non-declared advising enrollment hold. Advisors in the University Advising Center (126 Strong Hall) or CLAS Student Academic Services office (109 Strong Hall) will be able to remove advising holds. Students submitting a completed Declaration of Major form to 109 Strong will have their non-declared hold removed.

4)         HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT TEACHING?

Dear students— Have YOU Ever Considered Teaching Secondary Science or Mathematics? KU has started a new program, the UKanTeach Program (open to freshmen through seniors), which will allow you to earn a degree in your field and a secondary teaching license in four years. The first course of the UKanTeach sequence, LA&S 290, is a one-hour course that will allow you to explore teaching as a career. We will even reimburse you for one-hour of in-state tuition. This course will prepare you to teach three science/math lessons in local schools during the semester. It is offered from 1–2:20 pm on Tuesdays next Spring in 142 JRP. Please consider teaching as a career and sign up for this course. If you have questions, please contact Jan Lariviere at jlariviere@ku.edu. Hope to see you next semester.—Jan Lariviere (For more information, go to: http://ukanteach.ku.edu/.)

5)         PALEOBOTANY being offered in Spring

Dr. Edith L. Taylor is offering Paleobotany (BIOL 640/641, #82775, 82776) in the Spring semester. The course covers the biology and evolution of fossil plants—from 3 billion-year-old microbes to modern flowers—the fossil history of plants and related groups. For anyone interested in a survey of all the plant groups, this course will cover that information! Lecture: MWF 9:00 – 9:50 am, laboratory M 1:00 – 4:00 pm; prerequisite: BIOL 413, graduate standing, or permission of instructor (etaylor@ku.edu).

6)         HUMAN ANATOMY LECTURE…additional section

Those of you who want/need to take BIOL 240 Fundamentals of Human Anatomy…please note! We have added a second section of BIOL 240 to the Spring 08 timetable; MWF, 8:00-8:50 am (83975). This section will be tailored to those students concurrently enrolled in both the 8:00 am lecture (BIOL 240) and Human Anatomy lab (either BIOL 241 or 242), and will be designed to coordinate lab and lecture material, thus covering the body in a regional manner (i.e., upper limb, head and neck, thorax and abdomen, etc.).  We are encouraging students enrolled in BIOL 241 or BIOL 242 to consider also enrolling in this new section. (The 1:00-1:50 pm MWF section of BIOL 240 will be oriented to those taking the lecture only and will serve as a stand-alone course.)

7)         SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

The Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences will sponsor a 10-week research program (begins early June and runs for 10 consecutive weeks) for outstanding undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in biomedically related sciences. Students in the program will have the opportunity to: obtain hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories; interact with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students; attend skills/development workshops, seminars; present research to summer students, present special poster at end of program. Areas of research include: developmental biology and genetics, tumor immunology, immunotherapy, and transplantation biology, cell-cell interactions, adhesion and protein targeting, genomic integrity and human cancer genetics. Students who are accepted will be offered a stipend of $3,000 and housing. For information and to apply go to: http://www.sloankettering.edu/; deadline to apply is February 1.
